How is Sinophone literature — encompassing voices from Taiwan, PRC, Hong Kong, and the wider Chinese-speaking world — received and interpreted by Italian readers? This lecture explores the evolving presence of Sinophone literary works in the Italian cultural landscape, highlighting how they travel across languages and contexts, and what shapes their visibility in translation. This talk draws attention to the richness and diversity of Chinese-language writing beyond national borders. We will examine which authors and genres have been most widely translated, how Italian publishers choose and present these works, and what challenges and cultural filters influence their reception. Particular focus will be given to literature from Taiwan, exploring how its unique linguistic, historical, and cultural identity resonates — or sometimes struggles to resonate — with Italian audiences. Through case studies and translation insights, this lecture invites participants to reflect on the complexities of cross-cultural literary exchange and the importance of promoting a plural and inclusive vision of Sinophone literature.
